Description of the project

Extending for 17.5 km, the new three-lane southbound section between Barberino di Mugello and Florence North is the natural continuation of the Direttissima Variante di Valico section of the A1.

The new infrastructure, opened to traffic in March 2022, has expanded capacity at one of the busiest points on the country’s road network, between Bologna and Florence, increasing the total number of lanes from 4 to 7. This has saved 1.5 million hours in time per year, cutting journey times by 30% and reducing CO2 emissions by 2,000 tonnes a year.

The section includes 10 km of tunnels, more than half those on the route, including the 8-km long Santa Lucia Tunnel, the longest three-lane tunnel ever built in Europe.

The project forms part of Autostrade per l’Italia’s broader infrastructure development and investment plan for the Tuscany region, involving a total of 120 km.
