Road haulage

Useful information for hauliers

Autostrade per l'Italia stands by the hauliers to ensure utmost safety and increase the comfort of motorway users.

Information for overpass transits

This section contains a list of motorway overpasses (pertaining to the road network of other Entities), whose design and construction characteristics (1960s/80s) do not allow the transit of vehicles with a gross laden mass exceeding a specific threshold, indicated next to each overpass, within the document.
Any occasional transit of vehicles with a gross laden mass exceeding this threshold must be priorly authorised by the authority owning the overpassing roadway, which must obtain the technical authorisation of the Motorway Regional Headquarters.

To ensure that road haulage operators are provided with correct and complete information, please be informed that the transit authorisation must be requested from the Entity owning and/or managing the road (Art. 10 paragraph 6 of the Motorway Code) overpassing the motorway. The Entity concerned will ask the Company to conduct the technical assessments required to verify the compatibility of the load pattern to be authorised with the structural characteristics of the asset, granting the Entity a specific authorization upon favourable outcome. This authorisation may be used by the Entity to authorise all the special heavy vehicles having the same load pattern. Please note that Autostrada per l'Italia may not directly grant transit authorisations on roads outside its jurisdiction and in no way can the road-owning Entity delegate to third parties the power to issue authorisations.

Network-wide services

Autostrade per l'Italia provides hauliers with 18 Service Areas with dedicated spaces and car parks with over 6,000 spaces reserved for trucks and coaches.
9 Service Areas along the network also offer dedicated areas with toilets and showers.
Moreover, there are 7,530 parking spaces for trucks and coaches located along the operated routes.

An important initiative dedicated to truck drivers is the Health Check Facility: an innovative and free service, offered by Autostrade per l'Italia in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross, which allows hauliers to undergo a health check in the Service Area, thanks to the on-site assistance of qualified Italian Red Cross personnel. The service is available from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, in the Brianza Nord Service Area (A4 Milan-bound, km 148.4) and Cantagallo Ovest (A1 Naples-bound, km 199).

Winter operations

In the event of snowfall along Autostrade per l'Italia's network, joint Protocols with the Traffic Police are enforced to ensure the safety of users and the operation of snow prevention vehicles. Autostrade per l'Italia invites all road hauliers to properly equip themselves for the winter season.

In this regard, from November until 15 April, on all motorway sections most exposed to the risk of snowfall or ice, users are required to have snow tyres fitted or snow chains on board, in compliance with the orders issued by the Autostrade per l’Italia’s Regional Headquarters locally in charge.

Users are informed of the obligation to have snow tyres fitted or snow chains on board through road signs placed along motorway sections and entry toll gates covered by the orders.

Transporters' Relief in Liguria: Conclusion of Activities Related to 2023 Transits

Following the Memorandum of Understanding between Autostrade per l'Italia, the Municipality of Genoa, the Port System Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea, and the Liguria Region, Autostrade per l'Italia S.p.A. informs that the analysis of the Travel Missions declared by transport companies that applied for a lump-sum reimbursement for the inconveniences to traffic caused by extraordinary verification programs or interventions on the network managed in the Liguria region regarding highway transits made during the year 2023 has been completed. This measure follows a similar activity concluded in April 2024 related to highway transits made in 2022.

The analysis of transport missions was carried out according to the criteria set out in the implementing regulation published here. Regarding the Travel Missions eligible for the benefit for 2023, the unitary amount of lump-sum reimbursement has been set at € 16.80 for each admitted travel mission and € 84.00 for exceptional transport eligible for reimbursement.

On the platform made available to transport companies, a statement of the total amount recognized will be available for each registered company, which will be credited to each eligible transport company using the bank details provided at the time of registration on the platform

Eligible for the lump-sum refunds are companies registered in the National Register of Road Haulage for Third Parties (pursuant to Art. 40 L. 298/1974) or in the NER(EC) 1071/2009 and 1072/2009 that have completed transport missions, during the years of reference of the Memorandum of Understanding, passing through the toll stations of the motorway network under ASPI's jurisdiction (A10, A26, Al2, A7) in the Ligurian territory.

Companies no longer registered in the commercial register and consequently not in possession of a valid tax position at the time the benefit is granted will not be entitled to the lump-sum refund.
A total of EUR 70 million, net of the initiative's management costs, is allocated as a lump-sum refund for the transport missions performed in 2022 (EUR 35 million) and 2023 (EUR 35 million), plus any further sums that may become available for 2024 upon conclusion of the cash-back initiative.

The unit amount of the lump-sum refund will be determined by relating the amount of the annual allocation to the number of eligible missions.

The refund claims may be submitted by the individual company or through a delegated party titolato acting on behalf of the delegating haulage company, by uploading the appropriate forms on the web portal containing:

  • records of vehicles and tolling devices
  • list of business trips and references to the documentation certifying the mission information (O/D) and the actual performance of the mission

If a business trip on the form has been carried out without the use of a toll device, the operator shall attach documentation proving payment for the transit.
