Barberino - Calenzano
Description of the project
As part of the planned expansion of the motorway between Sasso Marconi and Incisa Valdarno, and in particular the “Barberino di Mugello – Incisa Valdarno” section, which represents the most complicated Apennine section due to its topography and the environmental vulnerability of the area just to the north of Florence, the existing carriageways are due to be upgraded. This will involve transforming the former southbound carriageway into a northbound carriageway and modernising the existing northbound section.
Following the opening to traffic of the new southbound carriageway on 19 March 2022, the upgrade marks the completion of the entire Barberino-Florence North section.
The aim is to modernise the entire section and bring it into line with current technical and safety standards. The following is a list of the main interventions:
- Road surface maintenance, the complete replacement of draining pavement and restoration work on certain stretches of the motorway;
- The complete replacement of safety barriers along the entire stretch with the latest forms of barrier;
- Implementation of the noise abatement plan in accordance with the requirements established following the EIA;
- Rationalisation of the hydraulic engineering works to partially close the water collection and disposal system;
- Artificial extension on the south side of the Colle tunnel;
- New horizontal and vertical signage, primarily regarding the re-direction of the former of southbound carriageway and to manage the points where the two carriageways separate and merge;
- Update of the PD alle NTC 2018 and the latest procedures issued by the Grantor (primarily FOA, Integautos barriers, walls and kerbing);
- Update of the PD relating to tunnel equipment in light of the work provided for in Tunnel Safety Plan 1 (concluded) and Tunnel Safety Plan 2 (in progress).
Goccioloni I viaduct
The upgrade of the Goccioloni viaduct forms part of a more general widening to three lanes of the Barberino di Mugello - Florence North section, where the new southbound carriageway has already been completed.
The Goccioloni I viaduct, opened to traffic at the end of 1960, is located in the municipality of Calenzano (FI) on the section of the A1 Milan-Naples motorway: Branch R84, Barberino-Calenzano link road, at km 266+744 south-east of the town of Croci di Calenzano.
The viaduct has two carriageways on separate decks and currently only the northbound carriageway is open to traffic.
Work in progress
The work envisages the following:
- Replacement of the existing deck with an isostatic span with beams in prestressed reinforced concrete;
- Demolition and reconstruction of the pier caps, necessary in order to install a new deck that can handle current load conditions;
- Installation of a continuous deck with a load-bearing section in steel and concrete;
- Reinforcement and restoration of the piers and coupling beams, through reprofiling and the addition of a steel jacket with added reinforcement;
- Reinforcement and restoration of the end abutments;
- Reinforcement and restoration of the foundation plinths.
Demolition of the existing deck of the former southbound carriageway.
The demolition will take place via a controlled explosion, with the northbound carriageway closed to traffic.
Activity
