Description of the project

This 22-km section has been widened from 2 to 3 running lanes, with certain stretches deviating from the existing road in 3-lane tunnels. Alongside the deviated sections the former southbound carriageway has been upgraded and opened to northbound traffic.

The Services Conference concluded in October 1999. An Environmental Observatory (Guarantee Committee) was set up in 2000 to ensure that the detailed designs met the requirements imposed as a result of the EIA and the Services Conference. Between March 2002 and July 2004, the Grantor approved the designs cleared by the Observatory. Work then began between October 2003 and October 2005.

Construction of the infrastructure was an extremely complex process as it affected a densely populated area of great natural beauty.

The Florence North - Florence Scandicci section was fully opened to traffic in April 2007. The Florence Scandicci – Florence Impruneta and Florence Impruneta – Florence South sections were fully opened to traffic in August 2013.

The project for the Florence North – Florence South section also includes the modernisation and upgrade of the new Scandicci junction, currently at the design and consents stage.

The project also aims to improve traffic flow and integrate the various link roads used by traffic heading from the A1 motorway to the FI.PI.LI. highway (the main road connecting Florence with Pisa and Livorno) and local roads in Scandicci and Florence. This will ease congestion on the entire interchange, reducing traffic volumes throughout the area.
