Description of the project

The project completes the city’s ring road, connecting Modena Ring Road – “Luigi Einaudi Relief Road” to the SS 623 Vignolese and simplifying access to the Modena South toll station on the A1. The section of road will be approximately 5,270 metres long, with a further 1,000 metres of junctions for traffic entering and exiting the local road network.
The initiative forms part of the compensatory work relating to the widening of the A1 Milan-Naples to four lanes between the Modena Brennero Interchange (A22) and the Bologna Borgo Panigale Interchange (A1).
On 5 January 2023, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport declared the detailed design to be in the “public interest” and, following the handover of the expropriated areas, worksite preparation will have been completed in readiness for construction to begin. The work is expected to take 18 months from the start-up.

Community initiatives

The main objectives on which the design was based are:

  • A more balanced division of traffic flows heading from the south-east quadrant;
  • A direct interchange between the ring road and Modena toll station and, as a result, between the two motorway toll stations serving Modena;
  • Complete removal of a significant percentage of through traffic, above all heavy goods vehicles, from the urban area.

The above drivers underline the infrastructure’s strategic importance for both local mobility and for the wider, more complex transport needs of the area around Modena.
