Technology and future

Every day, 4.7 million people travel across our motorway network, covering more than 50.4 billion kilometres annually (2023 data). The nearly 3,000 kilometres of motorway under management represent a vital pillar of accessibility, as well as a key resource for those embarking on a journey.
Our Group is at the forefront of technological innovation applied to motorway infrastructure management.
The motorways of the future will be smart, efficient, and designed with sustainability at their core. Imagine a world where advanced technology simplifies driving and completely transforms our travel experience. Innovative tools will enable us to manage the complexity of modern mobility while ensuring safety, simplicity, and environmental responsibility.
The mobility of tomorrow will be a symphony of data, with roads and motorways that not only lead us to our destinations, but actively contribute to the innovation process. Thanks to cutting-edge technologies, infrastructure managers will be able to make predictive decisions, improving both safety and the overall travel experience.
A common thread links three key projects: the San Giorgio Bridge, completed in 2020; the Genoa sub-port tunnel, currently under construction; and the concept for the next-generation motorway service areas. All three form part of a wider infrastructure system and share a strong desire to engage in meaningful dialogue with the surrounding territory and urban fabric, returning green spaces and public areas to local communities.
Research and technological innovation, in harmony with nature and supported by a deep awareness of energy cycles and social value, form the foundation of the art of building embraced by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW). Founded by Renzo Piano in 1981, RPBW is based in both Genoa and Paris. With 12 partners and a team of 150 professionals from across the world, the practice is guided by a design philosophy rooted in multidisciplinary collaboration, sensitivity to context, a commitment to public space, and an ongoing dialogue with clients. To date, RPBW has successfully undertaken and completed over 140 projects worldwide – spanning a wide variety of types, scales, continents, and cultures, with each commission presenting a new and unique adventure for the Workshop.

Emiliano Ponzi
The concept of continuity lies at the heart of this work. The journey depicted is expressed through a single temporal and graphic element: the road.
The character of the illustrations—their colour palette, perspective, and visual framing—removes the images from any fixed temporal setting, carrying us beyond the boundaries of reality and the confines of the present. Snapshots, glimpses of landscapes, fragments of shared and cherished memories accompany us on a journey that becomes a vehicle for transition towards the future.
Emiliano Ponzi is an Italian illustrator, visual artist, and author based in New York. He has written and illustrated several books and collaborated with leading publications such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. Ponzi’s work has been exhibited in numerous shows, the most recent of which was held in autumn 2024 at the Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York.
