After a century, the A8 Milano-Laghi, Italy's first motorway, once again represents an Italian excellence, becoming the first and only five-lane motorway in Italy, an essential response to the need to increase the capacity of one of Italy's busiest junctions.
The project carried out by Autostrade per l'Italia and the Group's companies (Amplia for construction, Tecne for engineering and Movyon for technology) involved the construction of a new lane in each direction between the Milano Nord barrier and the interconnection with the A9 Lainate-Como-Chiasso motorway. A total of about 4.4 km of additional lane to serve the Milan Metropolitan City and the surrounding industrial areas.
The project increases the capacity of one of the country's busiest stretches, with 170,000 vehicles per day and peaks exceeding 200,000 transits. The A8 is the link between the biggest routes in Northern Italy and is part of two international corridors to Northern European countries. The infrastructure improves journey times, saving 1 million hours per year.
