A8 Milano-Varese: widening to 5 lanes between Milano Nord and Lainate
A century of Italian excellence for an increasingly sustainable, technological and secure network.
The work
After a century, the A8 Milano-Laghi, Italy's first motorway, once again represents an Italian excellence, becoming the first and only five-lane motorway in Italy, an essential response to the need to increase the capacity of one of Italy's busiest junctions.
The project
The project carried out by Autostrade per l'Italia and the Group's companies (Amplia for construction, Tecne for engineering and Movyon for technology) involved the construction of a new lane in each direction between the Milano Nord barrier and the interconnection with the A9 Lainate-Como-Chiasso motorway. A total of about 4.4 km of additional lane to serve the Milan Metropolitan City and the surrounding industrial areas.
The project increases the capacity of one of the country's busiest stretches, with 170,000 vehicles per day and peaks exceeding 200,000 transits. The A8 is the link between the biggest routes in Northern Italy and is part of two international corridors to Northern European countries. Thanks to a total investment of around EUR 200 million, the infrastructure improves journey times, saving 1 million hours per year.
Interventions favouring the territory
Among the most important projects for the area, the Autostrade per l'Italia Group is carrying out:
- The new Lainate Tunnel, an important infrastructure to reconnect the metropolitan area; it is a fundamental element of the new road system linking SP 101 and SP 109, which includes a subway for the interconnection between the A8 and A9 motorways.
- The construction of two slip roads and a new roundabout on Corso Europa, which will allow the junction with Via Nervino.
- A new overpass in viale Manzoni, which is already in operation, the new road link with the municipality of Rho and new cycle paths.
